A reference to keep close
The windowsill guide
A simple reference for observing the space before changing your plants. Start with one pot and one clear question.
01
Follow the light
Look at the same window in the morning, at midday and near evening. Note where direct sun actually lands rather than relying only on a compass direction. Buildings, trees and curtains change the picture. A room that looks bright to you can still have a much dimmer shelf farther from the glass.
02
Check before watering
Plant needs vary by species, pot, soil and season. Before watering, look at the surface and feel the pot weight. If you know the species, follow an appropriate care reference. A calendar can remind you to inspect a plant, but it cannot tell you whether that plant needs water today.
03
Give water a way out
Choose a container with drainage holes and a saucer or removable outer pot. After watering, allow excess water to drain and empty the outer container. A layer of stones is not a substitute for an outlet. Keep the surface underneath protected while you learn how your container behaves.
04
Change one thing
If a plant looks different, record what changed in its position, watering or surroundings. Avoid repotting, moving and fertilizing all at once simply because one leaf changed. A small observation record makes it easier to understand the response to the next adjustment.
