A clean-leaf afternoon

A quiet inspection gives you a closer view of the leaves you pass every day.

Take a closer look

Move the pot to a place where you can inspect both sides of its leaves in comfortable light. Notice dust, changes in color and any marks you have not seen before. Avoid jumping from one unfamiliar spot to a diagnosis. First compare it with nearby leaves and your earlier observations.

Use a gentle method

If the species tolerates wiping, support a leaf from below and use a soft, lightly damp cloth. Test a small area first. Hairy or delicate leaves can need a different approach. Skip household polish and decorative leaf shine; the aim is an unobstructed view of the plant, not a glossy finish.

Finish with an observation

Return the pot to its familiar place and make a brief note if anything deserves another look. An inspection is useful even if no cleaning was needed. Keep the cloth and routine simple enough to repeat. It is easier to notice a change when you know what the plant usually looks like.
